Deadly Remembrance Chapter One: Andrew Hawthorne

ANDREW HAWTHORNE: November

It was 1969; Andrew Hawthorne was thriving in his third year of Law School in Maryland. He had returned to his apartment in Baltimore after a short Thanksgiving break with his family in Watertown, New York. Life was looking bright for him. He had a lot to be thankful for. He had found an internship at a local firm, and his reputation was growing amongst his elders. He had an excellent standing in the community in which he volunteered his services. He was faithful to his church, and the woman whom he was engaged, his fiancé, Angelica. Angelica was the most beautiful woman in the world in his eyes. Life was treating him well.

Andrew Hawthorne was a handsome man. At the height of 6’ 2”, he walked tall with confidence, and abundance of pride, which he found in life. He always carried and portrayed a positive outlook on life. His assurance shone a genuine light in his deep brown eyes. Though his gaze was piercing, he had the ability to bring a sense of calm to anyone he was around. One could say he was cool under fire; the making of a great lawyer. Andrew put all his passion toward anything he involved himself in; from church events, schoolwork, his internship, to rallying events. It was all or nothing. He was fulfilling the goals he had set for himself. Andrew’s close friends whom he had roomed with over the last few years, made jokes; calling him anal, due to the collected list of objectives he wished to obtain in his life. He checked them off proudly one by one as he completed them.

Andrew’s focused goal was graduating from college and obtaining a stable position as a permanent employee where he was interning. The lawyers at the law firm were optimistic with their new intern. The next important goal was to marry the woman of his dreams, Angelica. If he did not focus on his work during the day, he would have fallen into the spell of constant fantasy. So, he did his best to stay focused, wanting to provide Angelica with all the wonders of life he could give, with all freedom of worry. So, he worked hard to establish a life for himself and his beautiful fiancé, because he loved her and she him; with her innocent modesty.

The evening Andrew returned from Thanksgiving vacation, he sat on his favorite bench by the pond, and pondered; reeling his perfect life, like a movie, through his mind. He smiled, as he realized all his life’s dreams were coming true. He found satisfaction with the accomplishments he had made thus far. He believed he would give Angelica a life of contentment and unfailing love. Was there anything that could take this ecstasy from him? He did not think so…
